This week, we are starting to dig into covenant. One of the first things we always remind people is this. Covenant is for our benefit. When God says something, it is settled. He does not change it, and He does not go back on it. Covenant does not make God’s Word more true. Covenant helps anchor our soul so we can stand steady when the enemy tries to attack our mind, our will, and our emotions.
We can see this even with Abraham in Genesis. God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as the stars. Abraham believed, and it was counted to him as righteousness. But immediately after believing, Abraham asked, “How do I know?” God responded by cutting covenant. That is important. Abraham believed what God said, but he needed his soul anchored. Covenant did that. It gave him something solid to hold onto in the face of time, pressure, and opposition. In a similar way, believers today can believe God and still struggle to live with confidence if covenant truth has not become real to them.
We also reminded you that faith comes by hearing the Word. The Word is the source of faith. But Hebrews tells us the Word does not profit unless it is mixed with faith. When the Word is mixed with faith, the power of God is activated in your life. The gospel becomes the power of God unto salvation. That includes healing, deliverance, protection, provision, and every part of the salvation package. God’s Word is not powerless. It is self-fulfilling when it is received and believed. It produces what it promises when faith is applied to it.
A question we get often is about the difference between promise and covenant. People ask if a promise is weaker than a covenant. The truth is this. God’s Word is always true. But covenant helps us understand the binding nature of what God has spoken. A covenant is a serious agreement, often sealed by blood, and it is meant to anchor the soul. God used covenant with Abraham to help him move from simply believing to truly knowing. That is why covenant matters. And in the New Testament, our covenant is even greater. It is ratified in the blood of Jesus. It is unbreakable. It was made between God the Father and God the Son. That means the promises are secure, and you have something solid to stand on every day of your life.
When we realize our actual roles and places in our marriages according to Scripture, the wives will sparkle and shine with radiance and the husbands will really appreciate and honor the gem with which the Lord has blessed them!
