When God gives an assignment, not everyone involved will have the same role. Some are called to go. Others pray, give, encourage, and provide the resources necessary to accomplish the work. Scripture teaches us that each one has a part, and together we share in the harvest.
We see this principle clearly in 1 Samuel 30. David and his men returned to Ziklag and discovered that their families had been taken captive. After seeking the Lord, David received direction to pursue them with the promise that they would recover all.
Of David’s 600 men, 200 were too exhausted to continue and stayed behind with the supplies while the other 400 went into battle. God gave David and his men victory, and they recovered everything that had been taken.
When they returned, some of the men who had gone into battle did not want to share the spoil with those who stayed behind. David refused. He established that the one who stayed with the supplies would receive the same share as the one who went into battle.
That principle continues throughout Scripture.
Jesus taught that the person who receives a prophet receives a prophet’s reward, and even something as simple as giving a cup of cold water in support of a disciple carries a reward. We do not have to personally stand on the front lines of every ministry assignment to participate in what God accomplishes through it.
Partnership connects us to the harvest.
When we support the Gospel through prayer, giving, encouragement, or practical resources, we are joining ourselves to a God-given assignment. We see this again when Peter obeyed Jesus and let down his net. When the catch became too great for Peter to handle alone, his partners came alongside him. The harvest was so great that their boats were filled too.
Partnership is not simply giving money to a ministry. It is a covenant connection. The ministry fulfills its calling to go, teach, and preach. Partners help provide what is necessary to accomplish that assignment. Each has a different role, but both participate in the resulting fruit.
Scripture also shows us that natural resources can accomplish spiritual work. Luke records women who supported Jesus and His disciples from their own finances and possessions as they traveled preaching the Gospel. They sowed something natural into something that produced eternal results.
The same is true for us today. We may never personally travel to every place the Gospel reaches. We may never meet every person whose life is changed. But through faithful partnership, we can have a part in what God is doing.
Some go. Some help send. Both matter to the assignment.
When we join together around the work God has called us to do, we also join together in the harvest it produces.
