The words we speak matter because they reveal what is filling our hearts. Jesus taught that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Our words are not insignificant. They are an expression of what we believe and what we are choosing to agree with.
Throughout Scripture, we see that words carry significance. Proverbs tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue, and Deuteronomy tells us that God has set before us life and death, blessing and cursing. Part of choosing life is choosing words that agree with God and His promises.
Job gives us an example of what happens when fear becomes the dominant voice. Job was continually concerned about what might happen to his children, and he eventually said, “The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me.” Fear had entered his heart, came out of his mouth, and was followed by action. Fear operates in the opposite direction of faith. Instead of continually rehearsing the problem, we must believe and speak God’s answer.
This applies to every area of life. When concerns arise about our families, finances, health, or circumstances, we have a choice. We can continually repeat the problem, or we can find God’s promise and speak the answer. Prayer is not about magnifying the challenge. Prayer is about bringing our agreement into alignment with what God has already said.
David faced a giant that caused an entire army to respond in fear. But David had a different sound. Instead of focusing on Goliath’s size or threats, he remembered God’s faithfulness. He looked back at the victories God had already given him and declared that the same God who delivered him before would deliver him again.
That principle still applies today. When we face a new challenge, we should remember what God has already done. Previous victories become part of our testimony and strengthen our faith for what is ahead.
When David asked, “Is there not a cause?” the word translated “cause” carries the idea of a word or promise. In other words, David was asking, “Is there not a Word from God that covers this situation?” Whatever giant we face, there is a covenant promise that applies. Our responsibility is to find that Word, place it in our heart, and put it in our mouth.
We see this same principle at Jericho. God had already promised Israel the victory, but they still had to follow His instructions. The walls did not fall simply because they marched around the city or because the trumpets sounded. They fell when the people gave the great shout, the voice of triumph. They gave voice to what God had already said.
Faith does not wait until the victory is visible before it speaks. Faith gives voice to the victory God has already promised.
The encouragement this week is simple. Do not allow fear to become the loudest voice in your life. Find the Word that covers your situation. Remember God’s faithfulness. Speak His promises. Give voice to what God has already said, and walk forward with the sound of triumph.
