The Truth About Love

JAN 25, 2026

This week, we turn our attention to the truth about love—not cultural definitions, not past experiences, but love as the Bible actually presents it within the Christian covenant. As believers, we are beneficiaries of a covenant established through Jesus, and love is central to how that covenant works in real life. Scripture tells us plainly that faith works by love (Galatians 5:6). Faith may be the channel through which God’s grace flows, but love is what widens and deepens that channel, allowing faith to operate powerfully and consistently.

Many people struggle with the concept of love because of upbringing, tradition, or environments where “love” was harsh, conditional, or confusing. But biblical love is not passive or permissive—and it is never harmful. True love corrects for protection, not punishment. Just as a caring father intervenes to prevent a child from harm, God’s correction is rooted in spiritual well-being, never destruction. Jesus modeled this perfectly. While there were moments of firm correction, the overwhelming majority of His ministry was marked by compassion—healing the sick, restoring the broken, and meeting people at their point of need.

We see this clearly in the story of Thomas in John 20. Thomas wasn’t uniquely doubting—every disciple struggled to believe at first. Yet Jesus did not shame them. He met them in love, strengthened their faith, and invited them forward into the blessing of believing. That is the pattern of true love: correction when necessary, compassion always leading, and faith being raised—not crushed. When we align our understanding of love with Scripture instead of tradition, we begin to experience the freedom, confidence, and victory God intended for covenant living.
