What's Love Got To Do With It

When most men hear the word love, they check out, but scripture doesn’t let us do that.

In 1 Corinthians 16:13–14, we’re told to stay alert, stand firm in faith, be courageous, and be strong... and then it says to do everything in love. That’s not a contradiction; it’s a design. Biblical strength isn’t loud, insecure, or reactive. Real strength is immovable, courageous, and controlled, anchored in faith and expressed through agape: the God kind of love.

Agape love doesn’t weaken strength; it refines it. It’s calm power — the ability to stay peaceful without being passive, to protect without being provoked, and to lead without intimidation. Like a true master, strength rooted in love doesn’t need to prove itself. This is how men — and all believers — are meant to function: kind in daily life, compassionate in relationships, and fully capable of decisive action when the moment requires it.

And the reason love matters so much is simple: God doesn’t just love — God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). Agape love is a decision, not a mood, but it also produces real affection, compassion, and action when we allow it to grow. Love shows up in practical ways — serving, giving, praying for those who don’t deserve it, and choosing generosity even when it costs us something. Jesus summed it up clearly: loving God and loving others is the foundation everything rests on — and we can only love others well when we understand how deeply and freely God loves us first.
