Words matter. Scripture makes it clear that what we say is not insignificant. Jesus taught that the words we speak reveal what is in abundance in our hearts, and that our words have the ability to produce fruit in our lives.
Proverbs tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue. This is a principle God established from the beginning. In Genesis, God spoke and creation responded. Throughout Scripture, we see the power of words, including the testimony of believers overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.
The words we speak are always moving in one direction. They are producing life or death, blessing or cursing, faith or unbelief, victory or defeat. The question is not whether our words are producing something. The question is whether those words are agreeing with God’s Word and His covenant.
Sometimes we think of cursing only as using offensive language, but Scripture gives us a broader understanding. Words that continually agree with defeat, sickness, lack, or unbelief can also produce the wrong kind of fruit. Statements like “nothing ever works out” or “this always happens to me” may seem like harmless expressions, but what we repeatedly speak can establish patterns in our lives.
This principle is especially important in the words we speak over our families and our children. Instead of reinforcing weaknesses or predicting failure, we can speak words that agree with who God has called them to be. We can speak life, encouragement, strength, wisdom, kindness, and the truth of God’s promises over them.
Choosing life means choosing words that agree with God. When circumstances look challenging, we do not have to simply repeat what the world says. We can choose to speak according to the covenant we have with God. He has set before us life and death, blessing and cursing, and He tells us to choose life.
The key is filling our hearts with the right words. What we continually hear eventually becomes what fills our hearts, and what fills our hearts eventually comes out of our mouths. As we spend time in God’s Word, listen to faith-filled teaching, and fill our hearts with truth, words of faith become our natural response.
Jesus is the High Priest of our profession, so let our words be a profession that agrees with Him. Speak life over yourself, your family, and your circumstances. Choose words that reflect God’s promises, because your words are producing fruit.
