You Actually Do Live By Your Words

Whether we realize it or not, we are living by our words. The question is not whether words work. The question is which words we are choosing to live by.

Jesus taught that what we believe in our hearts and speak with our mouths matters. We can speak doubt or faith, defeat or victory, sickness or health, chaos or peace. The biblical pattern is clear: “I believed, and therefore have I spoken.”

Our words reveal what is happening in our hearts. Jesus compared our lives to trees producing fruit. What we continually hear is deposited into our hearts, and eventually what is in our hearts comes out of our mouths. Those words then produce corresponding fruit in our lives.

That means we need to pay attention to both directions. What are we allowing into our hearts, and what are we allowing to come out of our mouths?

Sometimes unbelief can sound like normal conversation. We say things like, “Nothing ever works out for me,” “We never have enough,” or “Every time we try, something goes wrong.” Those statements may seem harmless, but when we continually believe and speak them, we are establishing a pattern that does not agree with God’s covenant.

Proverbs tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue. God designed this principle to work for us. His desire is for our hearts and mouths to be filled with words of blessing, covenant, faith, and life.

And this does not only apply when we are intentionally “using our faith.” Our everyday conversation matters too.

What do we say at home? What comes out of our mouths in traffic, at work, when we are frustrated, or when something goes wrong? Pressure does not create what is inside us. It reveals what has already been deposited in our hearts.

Jesus also taught us, “Take no thought, saying.” Thoughts will come, but we do not have to give every thought our voice. Fear may come. A thought about lack may come. A symptom may try to capture our attention. But we can refuse to take hold of that thought by speaking it.

Instead, we choose life.

God told Israel, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.” We make that choice every day by filling our hearts with the Word and choosing words that agree with what God has said.

If we recognize that we have been speaking words of fear, lack, sickness, or defeat, we do not have to stay there. We can make a change. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize those patterns, receive God’s cleansing, and begin sowing words of life.

Pay attention to your words this week. Fill your heart with God’s Word, refuse to give unbelieving thoughts your voice, and choose to speak words that agree with your covenant.
